Medical repatriation from Thessaloniki (Greece)
Recently, we organised the medical repatriation of an abbess from Thessaloniki to the UK, on behalf of the Serbian Orthodox Diocese. The abbess had been working for a relief project in Greece and had suffered life threatening injuries in a serious car accident. Very sadly, another sister lost her life in the same accident.
Following initial treatment at the neurological intensive care unit of a local hospital, the patient needed to be flown to Manchester as quickly as possible, under the constant medical supervision of a highly specialised intensive care doctor.
Only two days after we were contracted, a local medical team, appointed by us, picked up the abbess from the Greek hospital in a ground ambulance and drove her safely to Thessaloniki Macedonia International Airport. For the medical repatriation from Greece, we deployed a medically-equipped Learjet 35 ambulance aircraft that was ready and waiting for the ambulance vehicle at the airport.
Immediately after the patient was taken aboard the aircraft, she was flown back to Manchester accompanied by an experienced intensive care team. Shortly after the ambulance aircraft landed at Manchester airport, another medical team picked up the abbess and took her to the receiving hospital in an emergency vehicle, where she received specialised medical treatment.
